It was interesting what she was saying about being on the boundaries because she grew up American but both her parents were Chinese and there weren’t many Chinese people in rural Ohio. She must have felt like she was different. And her parents didn’t talk at all about life in China or her family’s heritage. That must have had an impact on her sense of who she was. Makes sense that she talks about being in between. Love her work, thanks for this post, lots to think about. I’d love to go and see the retrospective in Washington. Not likely though.
Thanks for your thoughts Helen. I agree, it’s interesting the way she articulates how much her childhood and family have had such a big impact on her work. I’m sure it’s true for most artists, but she’s really clear on how it has impacted on her art, her ideas, her approach. I love how her aunt was such a big influence in her life, on her dad and how he encouraged her to reach for the heights. Reminds me a bit of my dad. He was my biggest fan.
Wow she's great and lovely to listen to. I thought I knew nothing about her but watching the video made me remember her more well known works. Found Ghost Forest very powerful and just wish I had the chance to walk through it! Fascinated by her 3D portrait by Karin Sander, a great new find for me. Happy to be back with Victoria and TGC ☺️
Yes, I don’t know what visitors thought. They have some really interesting art projects at Madison Square Park, so people who live and work nearby get to experience and see all sorts of interesting projects. https://madisonsquarepark.org/art/home/
