Oh wow. I’ve just gotten round to watching the video, isn’t that profound how that sculpture came about. Amazing though how the memory sticks and is recalled years later.
You have to wonder if that image of a person
With antlers was forming or flashed through the minds eye for a brief moment as his brother told him about the bumper sticker, or if that image got created or developed over the years?
I’m fascinated by memory/ memory formation and recall. I love how provoking these posts are.
In a way I feel like the sculpture and the explanation of it by Taylor together is the full artwork. The sculpture is one thing, but how casually he recounts that conversation with his brother is like a jolt and it super-charges the artwork.
Very thought-provoking post Victoria. It's made me think about what thoughts I have knocking around that are always there running in the background. Like Candice I also have a recurring memory of a lost lover, god knows where in the world they are as we aren't in contact. I probably think about it every few months. Not sure why. Taylor's sculpture hits you in the stomach doesn't it.
The Zeigarnik effect is all about unfinished business- it’s a cognitive bias that reminds of stuff that might not be complete. Have we left the oven on or not? It might show up with relationship endings too if there’s a remnant of curiosity.
It's so interesting how memories work isn't it. Have we left the oven on is really important alarm thought for our safety. Whatever happened to that person I once spent all my energy on but who slipped away into something else is a different category of alarm altogether.
It was the front door to my primary school. I guess it made me feel excited and eager to learn stuff but maybe a bit intimidated? Dunno. It's there though, cropping up in my mind all the time.
Love Henry Taylor ! , thank you for the introduction Victoria.

I have a memory of a big black school door with a lion's head as a knocker that often pops into my head. What does that mean?
Perhaps a door you need to open Vic? Or an opportunity is knocking. I wonder what was happening at the time you experienced the big black door?
Thoughts are strange when you think about them.

The commercial realities and necessities of making money are in yer face with her, but when you get past that her storytelling is so fantastic.
Exactly. Why are people so cruel.
